A TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) motor is sealed against dust, dirt and moisture and cooled by an external fan, making it the standard choice for most industrial and outdoor applications. An ODP (open drip proof) motor lets air flow through the motor, so it runs cooler and costs less, but it is only suited to clean, dry indoor locations. What does severe duty or IEEE 841 mean? Severe-duty motors are built for harsh environments, with cast iron frames, better sealing, corrosion-resistant finishes and upgraded insulation. IEEE 841 is a stricter standard originally written for petroleum and chemical plants that adds tighter limits on vibration, bearing temperature and sealing, plus longer warranties.
