Heat moves quickly to the drum's outer surface, which makes them excellent for slip clutch and tension brake service. The TLC monitors torque continuously, disengages instantly on overload and resets simply by reapplying air pressure, with no mechanical parts to replace. Is Danfoss Airflex the same as Eaton Airflex? Yes. Airflex clutches and brakes were previously sold under the Eaton name. The line became part of Danfoss Power Solutions when Danfoss acquired Eaton's hydraulics business in 2021. The products, part numbers and engineering heritage carry over, so we can support both older Eaton Airflex units and current Danfoss Airflex equipment. What is the difference between a constricting and an expanding drum clutch? Both use a rugged, air-inflated neoprene and cord tube. In a constricting element (VC, CB, HEVC, CM) the tube presses friction shoes inward onto the outside of a drum, which suits heavy-duty starting and stopping such as grinding mills and marine propulsion. In an expanding element (E, EB, ER) the tube presses outward against the inside of a drum, which sheds heat quickly and suits slip clutch and tension brake duty. Which Airflex clutch is used on grinding mills? Grinding mills typically use Airflex VC or HEVC ventilated constricting clutches, which handle large inertia loads and long slip times during start-up. VFD-driven mills often use an Airflex Torque Limiter Coupling (TLC) to protect the driveline from torque spikes, and Airflex Slip Detection Control adds monitoring to prevent damage from excessive slip. What does a torque limiter coupling do? A torque limiter coupling disconnects the motor from the driven equipment when torque exceeds a set limit, protecting gearboxes, pinions and motors from overloads. The Airflex TLC engages at zero speed, monitors torque continuously, disengages immediately on overload and resets by reapplying air pressure, so there are no shear pins or mechanical parts to replace. When do I need a water-cooled brake instead of an air-cooled brake? Choose a water-cooled brake when the application involves continuous slip or very high heat loads, such as drawworks, tensioning, unwind stands or dynamometers. Airflex water-cooled brakes absorb up to 5,200 HP. Air-cooled disc brakes suit start-stop, holding and emergency braking where heat is generated in shorter cycles. What is the difference between spring-applied and air-applied brakes? A spring-applied (failsafe) brake engages automatically when air or hydraulic pressure is lost, making it the right choice for emergency stopping and park-and-hold duty. An air-applied brake engages only when pressurized, which gives precise control for service stops and tensioning. Airflex also offers dual designs that combine both functions.
