Elecon Elign gear coupling

Gear Couplings

The highest torque in the smallest package

Gear couplings transmit torque through crowned hub teeth meshing with an internal sleeve, so they handle high torque, shock loads and angular, parallel and axial misalignment in a compact, all-metal unit. They are the standard choice for heavy, continuous-duty drives in mining, cement, pulp and paper and steel.

Series Available:

  • Elecon Elign: multi-crowned gear couplings from 1,300 to 1,100,000 N·m (0.136 to 115.19 kW per rpm). Types ED double housing, ER one end rigid, ET with spacer, EV for vertical shafts (to 174,000 N·m) and ES single housing (16,000 to 174,000 N·m).
  • Elecon torsion shaft couplings: ET gear couplings with a seamless steel torsion shaft for long shaft gaps, supplied up to 7,500 mm long for kiln, ball mill and main mill drives.
  • Ameridrives Amerigear: fully crowned gear couplings with torque capacity over 1,000,000 lb·in and bores over 10 in., full ratings at 1-1/2° misalignment; AGMA standard dimensions for interchangeability; O-ring or metal seals; reverse-mount hubs for unexpected shaft gaps.
  • Radicon Nylicon: gear couplings with a nylon sleeve for small power drives, bores to 55 mm; non-conductive and maintenance-free.

Flexible Couplings

Cushioned drives that absorb shock and vibration

Flexible couplings transmit torque through rubber bushes or rings, which cushion shock loads, damp vibration and need no lubrication. They protect gearboxes and motors on drives with uneven or impact loads, and the elements are replaced without special tools.

Series Available:

  • Elecon Elflex pin and bush: EFC sizes 01 to 17 (70 to 27,060 N·m, bores 28 to 195 mm) and large FC sizes 630 to 1600 (32,000 to 430,000 N·m, bores 120 to 460 mm); cast iron, drive in either direction, no lubrication and no adjustment after fitting.
  • Elecon Elflex FBC brake drum couplings: sizes 100 to 500, 120 to 9,830 N·m, with an integral brake drum of 100 to 500 mm for conveyor and crane drives.
  • Elecon HFC-A highly flexible couplings: nine sizes from 1,550 to 89,500 N·m nominal, for drives with high shock loads, large misalignment or uneven load; split rubber rings change without moving the coupled machines; -40°C to +80°C.
  • Radicon cone ring couplings: sizes 1 to 12, up to 23,500 N·m and bores to 170 mm, with rubber cone rings for high torsional flexibility; Type 613 taper-bush version changes shaft size by changing the bush.

Common Applications:

  • Conveyors, crushers and screens

Fluid Couplings

Soft starts and overload protection for heavy loads

A fluid coupling transmits power through oil, with no mechanical contact between the driving and driven halves. The motor starts unloaded and accelerates the load smoothly, which cuts starting current and shock on belts, chains and gearboxes, and the coupling slips to protect the drive during a jam.

Series Available:

  • Elecon fluid couplings: constant-fill couplings in four types: CD basic, CDR with a delayed-fill chamber for lower starting torque, CDRP with an extended delayed-fill chamber for longer soft starts, and CDRS with controlled nozzles for ultra-soft starts. Typical slip 2 to 5%.
  • Elecon ESC scoop-controlled fluid couplings: variable-fill couplings for stepless speed control from a constant-speed motor, with speed ranges of about 4:1 on centrifugal loads, 2:1 on constant-torque loads and 1.5:1 on rising-torque loads.

Common Applications:

  • Long and heavily loaded belt conveyors
  • Crushers, ball mills and bucket elevators
  • Boiler feed pumps, ID and FD fans

Universal Joints & Mill Spindles

For high angles, long shaft gaps and rolling mill drives

Where shafts run at large angles or the driven end moves, universal joints and spindles carry the torque that a standard coupling cannot. Ameridrives has built universal joints since 1978 and gear spindles since the 1950s, and offers factory repair and rebuild for its own and other manufacturers' joints and spindles.

Series Available:

  • Americardan 2000 Series universal joints: needle and roller bearing designs (sizes U2131 to U2192) with one-piece yokes and heat-treated alloy steel, for industrial and off-highway drives.
  • Americardan 3000 and 5000 Series universal joints: heavy-duty joints to 15° misalignment; 3000 Series from 55 to 860 mm swing diameter and peak torque to 3,153 kN·m, 5000 Series from 225 to 860 mm and peak torque to 5,647 kN·m, with custom designs above those sizes.

Torque-Limiting Couplings

Protect the drive train from torque spikes and jams

A torque-limiting coupling disconnects the drive when torque exceeds a set limit, protecting motors, gearboxes and shafts from overloads, jams and the torque spikes common on VFD-driven mills.

Series Available:

  • Danfoss Airflex TLC torque limiter couplings: built on Airflex VC clutch technology for VFD-driven grinding mills; monitor torque continuously, disengage instantly on overload and reset by reapplying air pressure, with no shear pins to replace. Torque capacity to 1,368,175 N·m (12,109,375 lb·in) in five sizes. See Danfoss Airflex clutches & brakes.
  • Fluid couplings: Elecon fluid couplings also limit starting and overload torque on conveyors and crushers (see Fluid Couplings).

Common Applications:

  • SAG, AG and ball mills on VFDs
  • Crushers and shredders
  • Conveyors prone to jams

Drive Packages & Replacements

The coupling sized with the rest of the drive

Most coupling failures start with a coupling that was sized on its own. Because we also supply the gearbox, motor, clutch and brake, we size the coupling to the whole drive: motor horsepower and speed, starting torque, service factor, shaft fits and the space between shaft ends.

What We Do:

  • Complete drive packages: couplings supplied with Radicon, Bonfiglioli and other gearboxes and with TECO-Westinghouse, WorldWide Electric and Bonfiglioli motors.
  • Replacements: couplings matched to your existing shafts, keyways and shaft gap, including AGMA-standard gear couplings that interchange with other makes.
  • Bored to size: hubs supplied finish-bored and keyed to your shafts.
  • Universal joint and spindle repair: factory rebuilds through Ameridrives for Ameridrives and other makes.

Common Applications:

  • New conveyor, crusher and mill drives
  • Replacing worn or obsolete couplings
  • Upgrading couplings on drives converted to VFDs

FAQ

What types of couplings do you supply?
Gear couplings, flexible pin-and-bush and highly flexible couplings, fluid couplings, high-performance diaphragm couplings, universal joints, mill spindles and torque-limiting couplings, from Elecon, Ameridrives and Danfoss Airflex. If you need a coupling outside these lines, ask us and we will source it.
Which coupling is right for my application?
Gear couplings carry the most torque in the smallest size and suit heavy, continuous-duty drives. Flexible couplings cushion shock and vibration and need no lubrication. Fluid couplings give soft starts on heavy conveyors and crushers. Diaphragm couplings suit high-speed turbomachinery, and universal joints handle large shaft angles. Tell us about the drive and we will recommend the right type and size.
What is the difference between a gear coupling and a flexible coupling?
A gear coupling is all-metal and transmits torque through meshing crowned teeth, so it handles very high torque and misalignment but needs periodic lubrication. A flexible coupling transmits torque through rubber bushes or rings, which absorb shock and vibration, need no lubrication and are simple to replace, but are larger for the same torque.
When should I use a fluid coupling?
Use a fluid coupling when a motor has to start a heavy load, such as a long loaded conveyor, crusher or mill. The motor starts unloaded and the coupling brings the load up to speed smoothly, which reduces starting current and shock on the gearbox and belts and protects the drive if the load jams.
What is a torque-limiting coupling and when do I need one?
A torque-limiting coupling disconnects the drive when torque exceeds a set limit. It protects motors, gearboxes and shafts on drives that can jam or see torque spikes, such as grinding mills on variable frequency drives. Danfoss Airflex TLCs reset by reapplying air pressure, with no shear pins to replace.
Can you replace a coupling made by another manufacturer?
Yes. Send us the make, size and a photo of your existing coupling, or the shaft sizes, keyways and distance between shaft ends. AGMA-standard gear couplings such as Ameridrives Amerigear are dimensionally interchangeable with other makes, and we can supply hubs bored and keyed to suit.
What information do you need to quote a coupling?
The driver and driven equipment, motor horsepower and speed, both shaft diameters and keyways, the distance between shaft ends, mounting orientation, starting and shock conditions, and the operating environment. For a replacement, the make and size stamped on the coupling and a photo usually cover it.
What is a service factor for couplings?
A service factor is a multiplier applied to the motor torque to allow for the type of driven load, shock, starts per hour and hours of operation. A smooth centrifugal pump might use 1.0, while a crusher or reciprocating compressor needs a much higher factor. Choosing the right factor is the most important step in sizing a coupling.
Can you supply the coupling with the gearbox and motor?
Yes. We supply gearboxes, electric motors, clutches, brakes and couplings, so we can size and supply the complete drive train together, with couplings matched to the gearbox and motor shafts.
Do you repair universal joints and mill spindles?
Ameridrives offers factory repair and rebuild services for universal joints, mill spindles and couplings, including other manufacturers' units. Contact us and we will arrange an evaluation and quote.
